Gamify Exposure Therapy

June 22, 2022

An app that will help you get out of your comfort zone

The Background

I believe that one of the key reasons Duolingo succeeded is that they were able to gamify the experience of learning a language. It no longer feels like sitting in a classroom studying. Instead, you’re trying to keep your streak alive, or you’re competing with friends. It turned the experience into something actually fun.

I was just thinking about other ways you could use this premise and here’s what I came up with.

The Idea

Exposure therapy, Duolingo style. On TikTok I’ve been seeing tons of videos of people doing exposure therapy for their social anxiety. They record themselves going up to random people, starting random conversations, asking people out. Basically just trying to get over their anxiety by learning that there’s not much to fear.

I want an app that helps gamify this with different prompts / leaderboards like Duolingo.

Every day the app could give you a little prompt of something for you to do.

Like you might open it up and it says “Go ask a stranger for a hug” or “Pet someone’s dog”

Basically it just gives you small (but meaningful) challenges to get you out of your comfort zone.

And people are incentivized to do it because they want to keep their streak going and stay on the leaderboards with their friends.
